POETRY PROMPT CHALLENGE:

Write a piece that begins “My tongue is…” Think of how metaphor and image can dramatize how you feel about how you speak or what you say.  Here are two short examples:

“My tongue is a box

  cutter in a bodega

breaking down cardboard stereotypes”

             “My tongue is a flower

             trying to bloom in

            my mouth.”

This exercise/opportunity comes from Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson, a poet and spoken word performer who is Poet Laureate of San Antonio, Texas. A few months ago, she issued this metaphor challenge to poets around the world. If you make a digital postcard with your poem on it, you can contribute it to her “My Tongue is…” project and it will be housed in a public digital archive.  To learn about the project, see more examples, and contribute, click this link and feel free to share!
